́ASSESSMENT OF COLONY "SHOWS DECREASE

Statistics contained in thả Annual Report of the Assessment for the financial year 1984-1986, Issued by the Colonial Treasurer, indicate that Kowloon is slowly but 'surely replacing the Island as the most important part of the Colony.

For the first time in 20 years, the rateable value of the Colony shows a decrease, but this de- crease applies to the Island, only, the rateable value for the main- land showing substantial lo-

cronies.

During the past ten years tha rateable value of the Colony, has | Increased by 74.47 per cent, and' this year's decrease is the first aince 1016.

This information was tabled in the Legislative Council at its inst meeting.

The Rateable Value of the Colony has, as a result of the new valuation, been placed at $38,041,- 860, which represents a decreass of $899,417 over the rateablo value for 1933-1934.

The

decreased valuations occurred on the Island, the now valuation for the City of Victoria being $25,175,534; as compared with $26,568,498 Inst year, and for Hongkong Villages $2,883,188, as compared with $3,304,447. The total decrease in the valuation for the Island is $299,417.

Kowloon increase.

On the other hand, Mainland. figures show substantial increases in valuation, the increase in the case of Kowloon being due to the building of now shops

and European Cats, 'and in the case of Now Kowloon to an increase in Chinese tenoment поивск Shamshulpo and some further bullding at Kowloon City.

I have, during the past few months, made an exhaustive examination of a number of the bost-known brands of Aspirin Tablets, and have, at the request of Nicholas Pty. Ltd., made a careful examination of "ASPRO." As a result of these examinations, have to report, after 10 individual tests, I find that. no single Tablet of "ASPRO" contains any trace of free Salicylic Acid.

I find the weight of the Tablats very uniform, and that they have been made by some process which, contrary to the general practice, does not cause 'decomposition and consequent liberation

for free Salicylic Acid. All other processes of Aspirin Tablet

manufacture. with which I am acquainted turn out Tablets which are liable to contain, and do frequently contain, free, Salicylic Acid.
