CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W, E. McKenney.
Solution to Previous Contract Problem.
You will never receive any en- joyment from contract unless you make a definite attempt during the bidding to try to visualize how the play will go, and unless, after you start to play the hand, you have a definite plan in mind.
I was surprised at the number of people who gave the wrong au- swer to the question asked in to- day's hand-which suit would you or diamonds,
start first, clubs
after winning the spade trick? And without any thought, many people answered, "I would start the diamonds, and then, if the Alucase, worked, I would lend a club and take the club finesse." No thought was given to what might happen if the finesses didn't work,
Now let us start right at the be- ginning. You are playing the contract at one mo trump, East; has bld spades, and probably has five. A spade to opened, and you win the first trick.
You can see that you are going to win a heart trick, two diamonds, and a club-five in nll. If you take the diamond finesse and it falls, the enemy will cash its spade tricks and will then prob ably lead hearts, and your con- tract will be defented, because you will not have the club sult established.
Now let us reason the play by starting the club suit. If we lead a club, we have a chance of estab. lishing three club tricks immedi- ately. We are sure of two din mond tricks and that is enough to xive us our contract of one no trump. If the club auit does not establish, as a last resort, we have the diamond finesse,
In the meantime, even though the queen of diamonds lays wrong, the wrong hand may get In the lead, or the defence may discard diamond. But the real reason for starting the club suit is that, in all probability, you can estab- lish three club tricks quickly and make your contract.
And now, if you will look at all four hands, you can see that If you start the diamond suit and the finesse Fails, the spades
