Washington, May 21. An important decision on the liability of American States for debts repudiated by their predecessors was announced to-day.
The hopes of British bond- holders of recovering from the United States part of the £78,000,- 000 estimated present-day value of the bonds repudiated by eight States of the Union a century ago was dashed by the Judgment of the United States Supreme Court to- day.
The Court refused permission to the Principality of Monaco to Ale suit against the State of Mississippi to recover the principal and laterest of bonds to the value of $100,000 issued by the State ninety years ago.
DAN IN CONSTITUTION.
It is understood that the bonds were presonted to Monzed by two British holders of the bonds power to take proceedings against the State of Mississippi, in view of the provision in the Constitution of the State prohibiting any future payment on the barkis, in defiance of the ruling of its own Supreme Coturt upholding the State's Nability.— Reuter Special.
