PANICKY FLIGHT FROM GAS DISASTER AREA

GENERAL ALARM AFTER TIFFIN

:

FRESH ESCAPE ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN SMELT

·

REFUSAL TO GO BACK

REMARKABLE SCENES WERE WITNESSED IN THE REGION IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE GASWORKS AT WEST POINT THIS MORN- ING WHEN PANIC-STRICKEN RESIDENTS FLED, THEIR HOUSES, LATER RETURNING TO SHIFT THEIR BELONGINGS FROM THE "DANGER ZONE."

A further escape of gas is said to have issued from the damaged gasometer, and although no repetition of the disaster occurred, the fresh scare has given rise to house-hunting on a large scale.

The alarm became manifest when, shortly before 1.80 p.m., considerable stir and excitement broke out amongst the inmates in the several houses at the east end of Clar- ence Terrace that survived the disaster.

A general exodus from the floors followed, and the terrace outside was, in a short time, piled up with every variety of furniture and personal effects.
