The serious plight of silk pro-i ducing centres In Kwangtung, particularly the Shantak District, in revealed In a petition submitted; to the Canton Government asking for rellef measures.

The petition states, Inter alia, į that in the Shuntøk District there} are

only

eleven ftatures, on "Akeleton" production, compared i with 328 Alatures during the boom period of six or seven years ago.

Whether the eleven can continue much longer is problematical in view of the almost complete sus- pension of silk exports.

It is estimated that the total loases sulferod as, a consequence of the bankruptcy of numerous Alaturea in the past two years in Shuntak are at least $18,000,- 000. In addition thousands of Alature workers have been thrown out of employment. Farmers of mulberry trees have also been Boverely hit, Their product now]] commands only sixty cents per plul--a price below" the produc-¡ tion cost.
