FROCKS
By Victorin Chappelle
OF WOMEN
How will English women accept the suggestion put forward by some of the London dress houses --and one or two of tho Frenchi ones as well-of shorter day! frocks? An inch of two seems to make a good deal of difference nowadays. A warning-do not. rush to cut down your dresses. Lengths depend entirely on height] and personal taste.
Linen Swagger Coats Among the sponsors of the new -or old short skirt length Is Stella Mary Pearce. And sho la one of the few London designers who have seen the charm of linen for swagger confs. She is showing some in a shade of faded batcher blue, with a strip of quilting down each sleeve. They are worn with printed cotton frocks, although this is the kind of coat which would look very 'smart for morning wear. There was a bright red flan- nel-awagger coat in her collection, too, with windswept revers, worn with a black frock.

Flannel is rather popular! material this season, and so le silk Jersey. Henry Bridburg showed smart little tailored suits of grey flannel with a deep box pleat back] and front, and some of the tailored Linlaw suits and frocks in silk) jersey-a fine close fabric, which felt like a heavy silk material

! A severe neckline is a note which has swept all London collections, no matter whether plain scerves →tied craval fashion-draped necks, or little high collars are shown. Busvine showed one gown in chiffon with a touch of contras- iting material appearing inelde the high draped front neck-line; this was used also for the lining of the low cowl at the back. I thought it would make an admirable brides- maid's frock.
And that is a point about the clothes this acason. So many even- Ing dresses can be adapted for afternoon or a very formal occa-1 sion with a simple alteration,
By the way, I was present re- cently at a collection shown to a very unusual audience of men only. All the representatives of the big material manufacturers were present, and Mrs. Hamilton, the designer of the clothes, an- nounced the names of the materials. ns each frock passed through the salon.
