WHAT IS TRUTH?

THURSDAY'S LECTURE AT THE MANUK LODGE

.The chair was taken by Mr. W. C. Felshow at Thuradny's pubile meet- ing of the Manuk Lodyo of the Theosophical Society, when 'Mr. | G. W. May delivered a lecture en-

titled "What is Truth?"

The question, suld the speaker, had been asked time after time throughout the ages, by a great variety of humanity, engaged in the renseless struggle for existence. The sciences are asked for repiles to our questions. We appeal to our emotions and to our faculties, especially to the faculty of reason. But though we may not always bo' | able to find it the truth is every-

where pressing to the surface.

We look to our Governments to control and order our national af- fairs, but behind the Governments of individual countries the Langue of Nations stands for a more inter- national brotherhood. Civilization in modern times depends on or- ganized communication between and nation, in Economic, nation Political and Selentifie

"and Artistic

realms. The League of Nations is the best exam- ple of this international co-opera- tion. The old theory Was that arms, for defence of state, against state were a necessity. Now what is needed la a moro Interuational out- look of mind on the part of all na tions, and here we have the under- lying truth of Universal' brother- hood gradually coming into its own.

Modern inventions are all based on theoretical research, The theories of science precede prae- tical discovorles, and their suc cesses in solving problems based on man's physical needs Inve brought the respect of the public to the exact sciences. The vaguer re- Bults of blology and psychology have led to more tardy recognition of them but it is now realized that they are us necessary to social and educational experiments as are chemistry and mathematics niedicine and bridge-building.
