(Continued from Papo 6.)!

by the quick-stepping young man of to-day.

The following quotations on

In his contacts, young Mr. Lendon Stock Exchange have been 1934 is far less demonstrative, and received by Messrs. Swan, Culbertson much more off-hand, than his pre- and Fritz in conjunction with Reuter, decessor of 1900. When, thirty- the two years ago, Sir Alfred Lewis, Market:After being firm. market cloned rather irregular, owing who is retiring from the chief general managerahip of the Na- tlonal Provincial Bank, firat pre- to weakness in Wall Street.

sented himself at headquarters, he carried a letter which anid: "Wien you come (to the bank) don't talk too much and don't bonst." In those days a young man had to be modest in his demeanour and most respectful in his attitude towards those above him. Now, not with out reason, elders and greybeards suspect the rising generation of a disposition to patronise them.

Parents are affectionately, but Irreverently, regarded as "stuffy," jor eccentric, and father is fami- larly spoken of as "Pop," or "The Old Boy". How distant is the time when a son addressed his male father as "Sir"? My own parent thought it presumptuous if vontured to argue with him. expect argument from my own son, and it is well for me that I am Ho prepared.

I

Casual in mont habits of life, crazy for amusement, good- humourod, materialistic and non- bookish, the modern young man, withal, is an attractive chap, like- lier to be a cheery husband than the slow-thinking, more studious Edwardian, who firmly believed that woman's place was in tho home.

Though young Mr. 1934 rates me 11/4 old-fashioned, that does not alter my regard. To exchange shoes with him, and wear, to advantage, his boret and polo jersey, own his jaunty outlook, and get a quarter of his "kick" out of life, 1 am pre- pared to give him three-quarters of my book-learning. Is the offer taken?

NO BIDS RECEIVED,

RESTAURANT BUILDING

WITHDRAWN

The five-storey building at 25 Des Voeux Rond Central, with a ground area of nearly 6,400 aq. ft., formerly housing the Chinese Restaurant connected with the Wembley Exhibition of 1924-5, and now defunct, was put up for auction yesterday in the China Rooms, with 14 reserve price placed by the mortgagees, Messra. A. Tack & Co., on whose instruc tions the sale was held.

A tentative upset price of $360,000 (understood to ap- proximate the extent of the mortgage) commenced the pro- ceedings, but only one bid within the minimum limit of $1,000, was forthcoming without renching anywhere near the reserve price. The property was finally with-

drawn..

as

Mr. E. V. M. R. de Sousa, the auctioneer, prior to opening the sale, described the building very valuable and desirable. situated as it is in the heart of the business centre, and within direct reach of the Post Office and Radio office, banks and hotels.

There were quite a number of people, mostly Chinese, present.
