West's openino lend was the jack of clubs, which Mr. Roof in the South won with the ace. He took two rounds of diamonds in dummy with the king and queen. Mr. Roof had 11 cold tricks-if all the suits were to break, he knew that the through West's ten-spot, as the гHE MERCANTILE BANK OF 12th trick could be developed.king and nine were both in dummy. But you will notice that the op- ponents-have-every--suit-stopped.

Mr. Roof decided to see if the spade suit would break, by play- ing the ace and king from dummy and then a small spate to his own hand. But West showed out, dis carding a diamond, which also warned Mr. Roof that the diamond sult, would not break.

He now led the queen of clubs from dummy, East had to let go heart. Another club was re- turned from dummy and East was forced to discard another heart.

Mr. Roof won his trick with the king and returned the flye of clubs -the squeeze card-which West won. In winning this trick. Weat squeezed his partner, East, who could not let go a spado or o dia- mond and so dropped the jack of hearts.

West had to lead a heart, which South won with the ace, and now had the six of hearts to lend |
