THE WORLD OF WOMEN
Younger Set Must Wear Trains With Restraint
SHOULD BE PROPORTIONED TO GIRL'S HEIGHT, MAN-TAILORED CLOTHES, RELIEVED BY FEMININE TOUCHES, HAVE YOUTHFUL APPEAL
By Jean Patou
Paris-Fashions for the eight-. een-year-old girl should not be
different in any way from the general. modo. It is merely a question of selecting an appro- priate style.
When you mention evening 'dresses for the debutante age, 1 have Invariably noticed that people: immediately visualize an anachron- ical style of dress-something very full, very modest and, of course. very light and vaporous.
Fortunately, the "Jeune fille" is not held to wear this one type of dress and no other, although, as n matter of fact, it le a vastly pretty and becoming one. Probably the reason why the mind associates this style more especially with the debutanto in because there are cer tain stiff fabrics such as taffetas and tulle which are eminently suit- ed to her. After all, only the very youthful and not fully developed feminine form is able to carry of the somewhat rigid lines proper to these fabrics.

The modern girl, as a rule, has very good taste in dress. While she may or sometimes in her choice of evening models, for day- time wear she will usually select clothes which are simple and clear- cut. These are becoming on con- dition that the cleancut, sober look is not exaggerated and becomes something too boyish altogether, emphasized also by the habit many young modems have of walking with their hands thrust in their coat pockets:TM
Apart from afternoon dresses, which can be as frivolous and as feminine as desired, I think that the more simple clothes, those that look man-tailored, are the appan- age of the young girl. Care must
be taken, however, not to go to the other extreme and achieve too masculine an air. The feminine touch must always be assured, in
