West's opening lead was the four of hearts. Declarer played low from dummy, allowing East to win the first trick with the king. East, Instead of returning his partner's suit, decided to lead to the wenk-1 ness in dummy-the club suit and it was this play which allowed! the declarer to make a small slam) In the following manner.

The club trick was won, with the nce, the king immediately cashed, and the nine spot ruffed. The king of spades was played.) and then the seven of spades. South won the trick with the jack, and West dropped the lack of clubs.

Four rounds of spades were! taken, declarer retaining the jack of hearts and the ace and queen of diamonds. On the fourth spade, West was squeezed. He couldn't hold both queen and teri of hearts and king and, ten of din monds he had to drop one of the ten spots.

If he dropped the teu of hearts, the declarer would win two heart! tricks in dummy with ace and nine, i discarding his queen of diamonds; while if the ten of diamonds were discarded by West, it would make the declnrer's ace and queen of diamonds good.
