MOTHERWELL, ST. JOHNSTONE AND RANGERS

ST. MIRREN AND CELTIC MAY HAVE TO MEET AGAIN

(By "The Pilgrim") `

WITH the quarter-finals of both the English and Scottish Cup competitions being played off on Saturday, Homeside fans will have! one of the greatest football feasts of the season -greater even than the Cup, final to which thousands have already made application, to find that the capacity of the venue has long been filled.

Arsenal have the fates on their side this season and, but for the luck of the draw, it is hardly likely that they would have continued thus far in a competition which they entered so madspiciously.

The provious rounds enabled them to settle down in their strido now and the visit of Aston Villa will not be the obstacle it would have been a month ago, The Villa have been going great guns but I cannot easily imagine a report of their vistory.

Manchester City are the only Club In this round who survived the distance last season and they liave a great chance of going oven further. Stoke have Improved considerably lately and took points from Aston Villa in the League last week, but it is unlikely that they will beat the City on their own ground.

На

unlikely how- It is not over, as Northampton's eclipse of Huddersfield at the First Divisioner's pitch in the fourth

round.

I wonder if Portsmouth will hold the pace they have been set

ting lately. I think they will win despite the bad luck they encoun- tered in the draw. They travel to Bolton and will probably meet with even more exciting scenes than at Swanson.

The

match

Prenton-Leicester is the most difficult to forecast:

Matters are a little easier north of the border where Aberdeen und Albion Rovers sustain the chal- lenge from the Junior divisions. Albion have a sporting chance, being at home to Motherwell, but the League leaders seem to do home and I better away from expect them to win.

THIS AIR-BALL PLAY

CAN ONLY BE AVOIDED BY PLAYERS POSITIONING THEMSELVES

(By "Saracon").

It is a common complaint of modem football that the ball is too often in the air. There are two reasons for this. One is the lack of attention to the details of positional play and the other to the eagerness of teams to force the pace and score by hook or by crook.
