ELECTRIC TRAIN CO-OPERATION.

Gatwick aerodrome is to be extended and equipped with the aim of making it the leading London commer- cial airport.

It has been taken over by a syndicate at whose head is Mr. A, C. M. Jackaman, and it in to bo turned into an all-the-year-round, high, speed aerodrome to London in all weathers and with a minimum of delay. In the terminal communications.

The high speed sida is being by providing a landing. ensured surface with a clear run in any direction of half a mile, so that fast machines can use it with per- fect safety, and by co-operation with the fast electric trains which run alongside the aerodrome.

Although Gatwick is farther from central London than Croydon, it is possible, by use of this train service for the terminal stage, to bring passengers into London in 36 minutes, which is quicker than is ordinantly possible by road from Croydon.

Outside For Belt

Even more important than the high speed side of the undertaking is the all-the-year-round side. The nerodrome is being equipped with beam wireless systems so that aeroplanes will be able to find it and to land on it in all weathers. It is not expected that the wireless landing equipment will be called upon except in rare instances, be- cause Gatwick is outside the Lon- don fog belt.

Moreover, it is so placed that it enables machines paying between to England and the Continent avoid the Surrey Hills, which are so often a source of worry and danger to the pilot. Often when Lympne is under fog or cloud there Is sufficiently good visibility at Gatwick for the landing and taking off of aeroplanes,

Mr. Jackaman explained to me last night the equipment he pro- poses to use for the fog landings when they become -necessary. There will, first of all, be the ordinary wireless beacon, which will bring the aeroplane to the vicinity of the airport.

Then a verticle beam will be used in conjunction with an ex- ceptionally accurate altimeter in the aeroplane, reading to within about 10. The setting of this altimeter for barometric pressure will be given to the pilot by wire- less, before he comes in to land. Then he will fly on the beam, which is only about 10ft. wide,

He gets into this beam,' Mr. Jackaman explained, about 500 yards from the edge of the aero- Idrome, and he then receives the algnal "Z" when he is exactly 300 yards from the edge of the aero- drome and 100ft high.

From that point it has been found possible to make a safe landing by means of a rather flat approaen with partial engine. Tha Worst that can happen is that the machine will bounce, through the wheels striking too early.

Gatwick is to be devoted solely to commercial flying. There will be no flying club there. The new buildings will consist of a control tower and sheds for housing machines. Full night flying equip- ment will be provided.

Mr. A. C. M. Jackaman has ex- tensive expérience of all kinds of long and short distance cross- country flying, both by night and day. He has also won many im- portant air races, and he gained third place in the "Morning Post" contest last year.

PALESTINE'S FUTURE

THE WATER PROBLEM

The Zionist Federation have been holding their annual conference in London.

Dr. Brodetsky said the future of Palestine would to a great extent be determined by the extent to which water was discovered on various parts of the country. -

Geological authorities, he said, considered that there were pro- pecta of the discovery of water sup ples in large quantities. One of the greatest British authorities on the subject had assured him that in the south of Palestine-which many look upon as practically a desert country-water was to be found practically everywhere it Proper stepa were taken to dig for it.

In addition to the question of finding the water, a problem which would have to be solved was the regulation of Its use.
