Every time South rebid spades he was endeavouring to sign the hand off, but naturally North, after getting a first hand bid from his partner, was not going to let the bidding die at less than a game contract.

The Play

West's opening lend was the jack of hearts. As South hold a single- ton heart, he went right up with the king in dummy and East won the trick with the ace.

East could sce no reason for shifting, so he returned the queen of hearts, which South trumped with the four of spades. South now properly reasoned that' East's double was breed on length in spades. Therefore, Mr. Halpin de- termined to play East for five spades.

He led a small diamond, which ho won in dummy with the king, returned

diamonds the seven of from dummy and win with the nee. Ho trumped the three of diamonds in dummy with the seven of spades, Declarer now returned a small heart from dummy. Enat discard- ed the four of clubs, and South- trumped with the six of spades. The six of clubs was returned and won in dummy with the acc. The king of clubs was cashed in dummy and another clab returned.

East, having nothing, also left, was forced to trump, and did, so with the three of spades. Declarer overtrumped with the nine and then led the nine of diamonds. West played the ten, but East was forced to trump.

East had nothing but the queen, ten and eight of spades, while de. clarer had ace, king and jack. So, rogardless of what spade East re- returned, the declarar was bound to make the last three tricks, which gave him his contract with an overtrick.

Six hearts by Bouth is the contract. Whilo. It looks as though West should make his king and queen of hearts, the contract can be made.
