TILDEN'S LATEST

IDEAS

The first official trial 'takes place on the Club ground to-day kicking off at 4.30, and the ADVOCATES NEW selectors are naturally hoping to obtain some encouragement and promise from the match.

I am afraid there la going to be

a certain amount of heart-burning about the final composition of the team, but In fairness to those whose job it is to make the de- cisions, it has to be recognised that this year they are confronted with an extremely onerous duty.

There is scarcely a position which one can name as a certainty for any particular player. The solection of the half backs and forward Une will require the most consideration, particularly

In

view of the line of policy in- dicated by the composition of the trial team, of complete club wings being preferred to in- dividuals drawn from various clubs.

The method ultimately is, I am sure, the best, but when it comes to a enso of choosing between say Ridley and Horquard and Strange and Bickford, Gosano and Ward and Yeung Shui-yick and Tay Qua- tong, very careful deliberation Is demanded.

MANAGER

New York.

There is a strong movement in America in favour of next year's Davis Cup team being led by a former International player of wide experience.

"I have nothing against Bernon Prentice (who managed the team this year)" sald W. T. Tilden. "It is simply a case of too many cooks. If they would give one man com- plete control, America would have a real chance.

MUST BE EXPERIENCED.

"I believe that the man in charge of the team should be one who has had considerable match-play ex-j perience in Davis Cup struggles himself.

"Dick. Williams, Frank Hunter. or Vincent Richarda would be pre- cisely the type to head the squad. i hen the Americans might come: through, but under the present methods the future looks bad," he added.

Meanwhile, however, Mr. Pren- tice is opt.mistic about America's chance next year: He says that in George Lott and John van Ryn the United States has the greatest doubles team in the world to-day. With Sidney B. Wood (jnr), Frank X. Shields and one or two other of the younger players available they would be able to put a strong singles team into the field. "I am distinctly optimistic about our chances," was his summing up.

TITULAR TILTS.

An unofficial world covered

courts professional championship, Jean Borotra has taken up golf.in which Henri Cochet, W. T. Possibly the only weakness in to-day's teams is the wholesale describes it as an amusing Tilden, Vincent Richards, Karel aclection of centre-holven for wing half positions, Leung Wing- chui for instance is not a wing said the famous Frenchman, "is "The worst thing about golf," half: I haven't seen him play that you have such a lot of time good game there. -Let us hope the players fulfil expectations. Which prompts me to repeat a grievance expressed by several of them. They feel that the New Year programme, which included league and charity: matches, followed immediately by the Interport trials, is rather a heavy Imposition.

A LITTLE THOUGHTLESS.

There seems to be enough in it to warrant consideration. Players Ilke Belirao, the Gosano brothers, i Syd Strange and others will by this time next week have played as many as five matches in eight days. The trints could, perhaps, have been arranged a little more judiciously. After all one can't] expectin footballer to cut himself right away from 'seasonal festivi- tles beause of a charity match and Interport trials. On other hand because of this, it is

The game developed in keenness.. with the Navy making spectacular rushes down the field, which the Club were sometimes lucky to stop as very few of their players were inclined to follow the bail. The Navy fought back, and were unfortunate not to score as their forwards heeled well, but their backa threw faulty passing.
