London. Dec, 29. An appeal to the public by the for the sum of £50,000 to effect. trustees of the Britlah Museum together with a corresponding sum guaranteed by Government, the purchase for the nation of Codex) Sinaiticus, has been issued.

The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Prime Minister are among the signatorics of the appeal, in which it is stated "Codex Sinal- ticus is one of the oldest sub- stantial manuscripts of the Greck Bible, the other being Codex Vatí- canus at Rome. It dates from Anno Domini 360, and contains the whole of the New Testament, with the non-canonical opistle of Barnabas and the Shepherd Herman and about two-fifths of the Old Testament. It and Codex Vaticanus may be clubbed as the primary authorities of the true text. of the Bible. In the British Muscum it will be securely housed for all timo and will be readily acceн- sible to scholars of all nations."
