The stipulated period for the lodging of nominations' 'for the Unofficial sent upon the Sanitary Board clapsed yesterday. There was only one nomination register- od, that bolag of Dr. Re A. do Castro Basto, M.D., B.S., M.R.U.S., L.R.C.P., D.O.M.5. (London), who is therfore automaticallywre-slocted and will resume his aoat as a mem-- ber of the Sanitary, -Board. He was proposed by the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga and seconded by Prof. K. H. Digby,

Dr. Basto recently returned from a year's holiday in Europe, whore he has been visiting the "clinics in Germany and Switzerland, and has just succeeded in obtaining the M. D. degree from the University of Lausanne." He graduated from the University of Hongkong in 1921, and after a distinguished career as a student, during which he succeed- ed in winning the Scholarship in Anatomy, and the Ho Tung Scholar- ship in Clinical Surgery, was up- pointed House Surgeon in the Gov- erament Civil Hospital. After holding this appointment he left for Europe, and joining the London Hospital he passed the examination of the Conjoint Board of Royal Colleges of -Surgeons and Physicians. He then took up a number of posts in the various special hospitals in London, and was appointed Assistant Medical Officer in charge of the surgical wards at the St. James' Hospital, Balham, London.

Later, Dr. Basto began to specialiso in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat, and served as Senior Clinical Assistant at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital (Moorfields), the Western Ophthal mic Hospital and the Central London Ear, Nose, and Throat Hoa- pital.

He is well known in the Colony, and has been serving as a member of the Sanitary Board for the last three years.
