EGYPTIAN COMES

TO GRIEF

RESCUED BY AIR FORCE PLANES

Cairo, Dec. 21. The air race for the "Oasis Trophy," one of the biggest aerial Derbies ever organised, was begun to-day over the circuit of nine hundred miles.

There are twenty-two foreign competitors in the race, of various nationalities, with British entries predominating.

All the foreign machines have landed at the first stopping-point, five hundred miles away from Cairo, the only other competitor, an Egyptian named Hazik, having beon forced to land some Afty miles to the west of Kharga,.

"A REAL XMAS

SENATOR PITTMAN ELATED BY TURN OF EVENTS

PREDICTS SHARP RISE

President Roosevelt's proclamation ratify- ing the London silver agreement and authoris- ing the purchase of newly-mined silver åt 64.5 cents an ounce, appears to have taken most silver operators completely by surprise. Rum- ours of action in the silver field have faded away for some little time.

A conflict of opinion seerns, to exist in regard to the likely effect of the proclamation. In some quarters, a sharp rise in world silver prices is forecast, with possibly a two shilling Hongkong dollar within a very short time. Other circles are of opinion that a temporary rise may be induced by speculators, but that the world position will remain substantially un-

altered.

Market conditions in Hongkong to-day. show that the American announcement has not, so far, any marked effect on the Hongkong dollar, although a slightly steadier market is reported.
