CONSTABLE'S MIDNIGHT SWIM

TWO YOUNG GIRLS

IN SUICIDE PACT

SEAFRONT DRAMA LAST NIGHT

Neither older than 14 years, according to Western reckoning, two Chinese girls were the central figures in what is believed to have been a suicítle pact drama last night which had a fatalį outcome for one of them.

Late In the evening, a Chinese constable, on his beat along the Praya West, had his attention drawn to two figures struggling in -the water.

Without hesitation he threw off his jacket, and boots and leaped into the water, and succeeded in keeping the two girls niloat anti a kampan came alongside and took them out of the water.

last

Both victims were in the stages of exhaustion, and although police officers did their best with the application of first-aid, one of them died while being taken to Hospital.

The two victims were: Lau Fung, aged 15, of No. 196, Tung Choi Street, Mongkok; and

Chan Wat-hing, aged No. 64, Tung Choi Street.

They were both factory girls employed at a knitting mill at Mongkok, and the affair appears to have been the outcome of a suicide pact.

When rescued they were tied together by the wrists.

What possibly could have in- duced them at their age to make this attempt on their lived, is n question which is being investi- gated by the Police.

Lau Fung was the one who died. Her partner in the fatal contract in reported to be progressing na well as can be expected" at the

Government Civil Hospital.
