Mr. Vance, who was only 4 years of age, was born in Washing ton, D.C. He was the son of Wilson and-Lilie (Beall) Vanco,, and in 1898 married Nance Elizabeth Hodges of New York. He was educated at the Preparatory. De- partment of

Brooklyn the Polytechnic Institute, and was a member of the Authors' League of, America, New York, and the Society of Authors, London. **
