Have you ever seen a hand whore the declarer had to get rid of some trump, even though he had no losing trump trick, so that ho could dia- card a losing card on dummy'a trump? Such is the hand that was sent to me the other day by Herman G. Geisert of Indianapolis, and I want to say it is one of the most interesting I have seen for some time.

While the bid of soven might be termed optimistic, the grand slam bonus in rubber bridge is large enough that it pays to gamble.

The Play

The opening lead was the jnek of hearts by West, which was won In dummy with the acc. Mr. Geisert in the South could see that his only chance to make the con- tract was to get rid of the ten of spades.

This looked rather diflcult, espe amcially when you see that the dia a.m.mend sult will not set. But he pro- ceeded to play the hand in the following manner:

Mr. Geisert then played his king of clubs and followed it with the queen, but overtook the queen with dummy's ace. He played the nine of clubs and picked up the Inst outstanding trump.

On the eight of clubs he dis- carded his losing ten of spades. This was one of the most unusual plays in bridge.

A diamond was returned, won with the king, the nee cashed, and Mr. Gelsertruffed another dia- mond in dummy with his Inst trump. Then he returned a spade, which gave him 13 tricks for his grand slam.
