Patou Stresses Simplicity

in Formal Winter Gowns

PARIS CREATION

SHOWS A SEMI-

NUDE BACK

By Jean Patou

Parin My new collection pre- sents clothes that are youthful, simple and yet essentially Parisian, I was guided by no other outside in- fluence than a perfectly feminine taste. Also, I had the desire to offer something sufficiently differ- ent and now.

Evening clothes always register the mode's changes in a much more evident manner than day clothes, and in a winter collection they form n very important part of the sun- son's novelties. This season, I endeavoured to obtain something different, a new silhouette, without having recourse to anything eccen- tric and also without rejecting the necessary degree of fantasy expect- ed in evening gowns.

Decolletes show in unusual amount of fantasy in the new styles, and here I have allowed my Imagination free rein. The almost nude back and high neck in frout. is designed for very formal oc- casions, but will be found. 'most effective by the women who can wear them.

The air of simplicity stressed in even the formal evening gowns Is the result of years of study and could only be achieved through suc-. cessive changes in the mode com- bined with a rare knowledge of the

of the Haute Couture.

Another feature of evening styles

is the massing, of fulness at the back of the skirt and the more

· general use of trains. Here the art of cut intervenes again to give that almost classical' line to the front of the dress.

These are but a few among the several changes to be noted in the winter mode. They may not be an evident to the unobservant eye, but they exist nil the same. After all,

If every season we witnessed un important change to fashions, this would merely be the indication of a misguided need of change at any cost on the part of women, which fortunately is not the case:

Styles succeed each other by a process of slow change: As a mat- ter of fact, they follow very closely the rhythm of evolution in our mode of living, and while it is only natural that present-day styles should be subject to A faster rhythm, I have always endeavoured to avoid too brusque a change. This usually becomes mere extrava- Range and eccentricity.

And change of style should never be allowed to overlook good taste and discretion, falling which it cannot maintain the stamp of real elegance, which is every creator's nim.
