LABOUR QUESTION.

Mr. George Lansbury (leader of the Opposition) asked Mr. Thomas whether the other members of the Commonwealth would be consulted in this matter.

Mr. Thomas emphasised that as the dispute arose through the re- pudiation by the Free State of the obligationa of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. It was a matter between the tifo countries and he did not wish to bring any other Dominion into it.

The British Government's desire and intention was not to close any door to an honourable settlement.

ALL AFFECTED.

The Government did not desire to drag the Dominions into the dia-

pute, although no-one could refer to any member leaving the Com- monwealth without realising that the other Dominions must be affected.

He hoped that the contingency would not arise but if it did the House of Commons would be in- formed of the whole situation. He trusted that no-one would say any- thing likely to embitter the situa tion.

contributory factor, overcrowding is rather the result of the Inck of means to rent better accom. modation near to work or to pay the cost of transport to and from work from outlying districts where there are empty houses than the direct result of the nature of the premises available.

If this deduction be correct, then, although slum clearance may be successfully tackled, overcrowding cannot be elimi nnted unt! there is an increase In the standard of wages. After stressing the need for the establishment of infant welfare centres in each of the Society's districts, and an arrangement by which the Society's Inspectors could have their offices in tho premises of the centres, thus main taining the closest possible liasion with the medical officers in chargo, the Committee states:
