Solution to Previous Contract Problem

A new type of tournament bridge, called Contract Pair Championship. is becoming popular. Contestants meet every other week, so that in- terest is maintained through tho winter season.

I dropped in for the first round of such a tournament at Cleveland rocently and came across a very Interesting hand. There aro aix qualifying rounds in this tourou- ment and a pair is required to play In four of the six rounds.

The 28 high pairs then qualify for the finals. of which there will be two rounds, and the winners will receive a trophy.

In recent articles I have been emphasizing the Importance of timing, and tho hand I watched made na excellent example.

The Bidding.

Those who belleved in pre-emp- tive bidding opened the South hand with four hearts. Patron- ally, I think this is a bad bid. The better original bid is, one heart, and I would have no serious objection if my partner wore the dealer and passed with this hand, as it has very little defensive

His proper declaration Is two no hna trump. Why? Because ho the king of diamonds and the king. Jack of clubs and, if possible, ha wants his hand led up to rather than through. Therefore, he pre- pares for this Immediately with a forcing bid of two no trump,

South then bids three hearts, showing that he has nothing more to offer. North then can safely show his spade suit with a bid of three spades. South's next bid of four hearts practically shows, long heart suit with 100 honoura.

North realizes that the success of the hand depends upon having one of his kings led up to. He can count on bla partner holding either the ace of diamonds or the ace of clubs, because without either of those aces he would not have an original bid.

With this Information North can go to six no trump, except that, if he does, it may encourage! hla partner to go to seven hearts. Therefore, the safer, bid is five no trump.

Then, when South goes to six hearts, North should go to six no trump..
