Solution to Previous Contract Problem

A new type of tournament bridge, called Contract Pair Championship, is becoming popular. Contestants meet every other week, so that in- terest is maintained through the winter season.

I dropped in for the first round of such a tournament at Cleveland recently and came, across 'n very Interesting hand. Thers are six qualifying rounds in this tourna- nent and a pair la required to play in four of the six rouads. ....

The 28 high pairs then quality for the finale, of which there will be two rounds, and the winners will receive a trophy.

In recent articles I have been emphasizing the importance of timing, and the hand I watched made an excellent example.

The Bidding

Those who believed in pre-emp- tive bidding opened the South hand with four hearts. Parfon ally, I think this is a bad bid. Tho better original bid is one heart, and I would have no serious objection if my partner were the dealer and passed with this hand, as it has very little defensive strength.

However, it would be asking o let to have partner pass with this hand. So with the original bid of one heart. North, having support in his partner's sult and a good bid- dable suit of his own, should not overcall with forcing one_ovor one bid of one spade, nor should he support the heart bid.

His proper declaration is two no trump. Why? Because he has

the king of diamonds and the king- jack of clubs and, if possible, ho wants his hand led up to rather hith through. Therefore, he pre- pares for this immediately with a forcing bid of two no trump.

South then bids three hearts, showing that he has nothing more to offer. North thon can safely show his spado sult with a bid of three spades. South's next bid of four hearts practically shown a long heart suit with 100 honours,

North realizes that the success of the hand-depends upon having one of his kings led up to. He can count on his partner holding either the ace of diamonds or the ace of clubs, because without either of those aces he would not have an original bid.

With this information North can go to six: no trump, except that, if he does, it may encourage his partner to go to seven hearts. Therefore, the safer, bid is Ave no trump.

Then, when South

goes to six hearts, North should go to six no trump.

On the play of the hand, you can see that if South plays the hand the at hearts, West will open
