New knowlcilge, which it is bef loved may alter existing ideas 'nя' to the possibility of sex defer- mination, has been obtained from the study of insect populations.

It has been discovered that the bex ratio of Insoets can be marked- ly influenced by the partial sturva- tion of the Inrvao. One day's starvation.increases the proportion of males, while two or three days' starvation increase the proportion of females.

These conclusions have been in dependently reached by workers in Australia and at the entomological Iaboratories at Slough of the Im perial College of Science and Technology, London,

The importance of the resulis, Professor J, W. Munro, of the Imperial College, explained. was that they provided clear proof that in at any rate one form of life sex could be influenced by outside faclors; and, more especially, that this could be done after fertilina- tion had taken place.

The insect chiefly used in the rosearch was the so-called flour beetle,

But it could be stated with con- fidence, Professor Munro explain- cd, that at lonet some, other insects were affected in the same way.

The extent to which the sex ratio has been altered in the Australian experiments is as follows: Normal proportion of males, 51.6 per cent.; males after one day's starvation, G0.8 per cont.; males after two days' starvation 46.4 per cent.

Research has confirmed the find. ing of professor Poulton at Oxford some years ago that selected male larvae of a butterfly which had been sent by post arrived in some cases as females, a result which was received at the time with some scepticism.

"Supporo for a moment." Pro- fessor Munro stated, "that these results are applicable to human beings, it would then be possible that the preponderance of male births during the war was due, to ' the food shortage. Equally,' - mo dern slimming by women might muke its effect felt. Admittedly these are speculations, but in the present state of knowledge we ought not to close our minds to anything."

Italy's "Bluebeard"-Cesare Ser-- vintti-was publicly executed this norning by being shot in the back. in the presence of over 5.000 people at the rifle range of Poli-1 gono, near, Spezin.

Public feeling ran so high that It was feared that he might be lynched, and a battalion of cara binleri protected him on journey in a horse-drawn tumbril from Spezia prison to the place of excaution, nearly two miles away.

Secylatti's career of defrauding, murdering, and cutting-up women was revealed four months ago with the discovery of two suitcases con. taining the remains of one of hle victims. He admitted another two murders, and several other crimes. of the kind were attributed to him. The trial ended last night at Spezia when he was found guilty and condemned to death. An ap peal for Royal elemency was re- jocted, and he was shot at dawn this morning.
