South, who was using a system of bidding whereby he opened first hand with two and one-half quick tricks and a'bid- dable suit, started the contracting with one heart. I aun sure that many of my readers in the West position immediately would dou- ble, and of course South would be out of his bad pred lennient. West eventually would have to bid hearts and could not make his contract.

Therefore, West's proper bid is to pass.
