DEAN INGE'S WARNING

“A GRIM TIME LIES AHEAD"

NEED FOR SIMPLER

LIVING.

Dean inge, preaching at Bromp- ton Parish Church referred to the sacrifices which the British people of to-day must make for the com- ing generation.

"

"A grim time los ahead of us," he declared, "which will test our national character perhaps even more gevarely than the War itself. In every field it is dimoult to pre- dict what the future will bring forth.

The next 30 years must be a time for recuperation. We must keep our eyes not so much on the immediate future as on the generation which will in- habit England when we are gone. For them we must make sacrifices.

"To take one example, wo must work out a reform of education which will place the choicest tren- sures of our ancient glorious civilisation within the reach of all who can appreciate them."

FUTURE OF THE RACE. "Even the, richer clase must realise for their own sakes," the Dean proceeded, "that if they are to exist at all it can only be by continuing those habits of self- donin which most of them learn- ed to practise bravely and cheer- fully during the war. They will have to choose between simplify- ing their mode of life or with- drawing altogether. Aristocracies that fall upon evil days generally die out.

I earnestly hope that our up- per and professional classes will choose the better way.

"When one visits a public school or university and looks at the boya-perhaps the finest speci mons of the human race that can be found anywhere-one feels what a loss to the country, and tho world, It would be if their class were to, disappear. But the-dan- ger exists, as all know who have. studied vital statistics, and the causes of it will go up. The only remedy for it is to adopt, volun- tarily, a standard of living. suitable to the changed conditions under which our children will have to live.

There are a fow who are still really rich. I think. It is their boundon duty not to set 'n stand- ard of expenditure which is im- possible for their class 23 whole. They ought not to make things difficult for the majority."

TELL-TALE ACRE OF WEEDS

Leads to Discovery of Roman Villa

In a field at Norton Dianey, twelve miles from Lincoln, interest- ing Roman remains, covering about an acre of ground, have been un- covered.

Chance circumstance led to the discoveroy. Mr. Taylor, the tenant of the form on which the dis- covery was made, was crossing the feld with a relative, whose atten- tion was attracted by a fragment of mosaic pavement. The field was known as the Abboy Field, and on acre of it would produce nothing but weeds.

Mr. FJ. Marshall, of Lincoln, the relative, induced the farmer to uncover a portion of the remains, and Mr. Arthur Smith, Curator of the Lincoln City and County Museum, and Mr. Arthur Smith, jun, Curator of Newark Museum, were able to identify the site as that of a Roman villa..
