Solution to Previous Contracti Problem

It is generally difficult enough to arrive at a grand slam contract, but when each partner's hand con-Į tains a sult with 100 honours and the opponents Interpose a bid, the correct bidding becomes even more difficult. Such was the case in the preceding problem hand, reprinted here, which I have selected from the National Individual Mastors Tournament recently completed in New York,

The Bidding

Very few players were successful in arriving at the correct contract of seven apades. The proper bid- ding on the hand would be as follows: South pass; West one spade; North pass, and East should bid two clubs. The hand is! not strong enough to make a forc- ing overcall of three clubs. The safer bid, I believe, is two clubs.

South, not being vulnerable, now puts in a two heart bid. West makes a free overcali of two spades. This is a highly constructive bid, and now Esat is justified in Jump- tag to four clubs to show that his | club sult is solid and that he wanto,

the bidding continued.

South will pass and West should bid four spades. East's next bid should be five hearts. Not only does this show support for spades, but in addition it shows control of the first round of hearts. West should then bld six clubs and East will bid six spades.
