Vale was heavily handicapped. He had two artificial limbs and could not swim unless the limbs were removed. One knife was lost as the men tried desperately to cut bis straps. The blade of the accond knife was too blunt, so Vale was doomed to remain clinging to the bont.

Gamble and Carlyle considerou who should remain with Valo while the other swam for help, Carlyle, the stronger swimmer, prevailed. He swam the seven miles in the open.sen from the Bar buoy, two miles beyond Studland Head, to Sandbanks.

On reaching the shore his cries for help were heard by shermen who immediately put out in their boats and by Miss Bridget An- dreae, the 12-year-old daughter of Dr. E. P. Andreae, who at once wakened her father. Carlyle, al most Insensible, had crawled to the doctor's garden.

The Swanage and Poole lifeboats soarched all day but no trace for the two missing men were found. The dinghy was picked up off the Old Harry rocks.
