Startling theories were advanced by Dr. C. C. Hurst of Cambridge, nt the British Association meetings thla year, regarding the future of. tha ovolution of man..

In a special satement Dr. Hurat discussed the possibility of:

A type of being, utterly different from the present, human species, scarcely human, save in mind and thought, and on a higher in- tellectual plane.

In fact, he said, there seemed to be no valid scientific objection to the belief in a futuro existence In the form of pure thought or enirit.

Dr. Hurat's predictions at the meetings of the British Associa llon were of the most confident character, for he has probably made a great number of practical experiments in geneties (heredity and variation) than anyone in the country.

The full account of these experi- monta, published in his book, "The Mechanism of Creative Evo- lution," is arousing. Intense terest among scientists, especially of the younger school, throughout the world.

There are definite indications in the present contury that under the influence of the mind of man creative evolution may be speeded up, and it is possible that the next- great step, surpassing mind, may be evolved in much less time than tho 1,000,000,000 years estimated for the evolution of life and mind. ""Mind is gradually increasing in influence at the expense of matter. and it is reasonable to infer that In course of time, when the next great step in creative evolution appears, the influence of matter will have been considerably reduced and displaced by mind and its unknown successor.

"I have followed Dr. Hurst's re- searches with the greatest interest, "I believe they have very great Importance as applied to plants" and animals. But I do not at present see the possibility of apply- ing them to anything so complex as the human organism.

"It is impossible for us to say whether a species higher than man will ultimately be evolved. There is no evidence that such a species is being evolved. But the ex- periments of Dr. Hurst increase the possibility that it may happen, The evolutionary process as op- plied to man appears to have stopped for reasons in the world itself."

Professor Julian Huxley ex- prossed the view that improve- ments in the human race by means. of artificial variation and selection could be carried out.
