disease, medical scientists so far have to confess their complete de- feat. The cause, the duration of the Infection, and the cure quite unknown.

are

The theory most generally favoured ls that the malady is caused by a "filter-passing" virus; that is, by an organism so minute us to be invisible beneath the microscope's most powerful Jena. The toxin of the virus displays an affinity with the grey mattor of the brain, no part of which is immune from its attack.

Sleepy sickness, or encephalitis lethargica, is a comparatively new discnse. It was first described in the winter of 1917 by the eminent Austrian physician Von Economo, when an epidemic occurred in Vionnn. Very little, if anytning, was known about it before then.

A TRAGIC MYSTERY.

In the following year cases were reported in England and France, and subsequently the disease as- sumed a world-wide distribution.

It was christened encephalitis lethargica owing to the prominenco of marked drowsiness as a symp- tom in the acute stages of those cases first recorded. Now lethargy is by no means an invariable aymptom. Frequently it le neso- elated with, or replaced by, an intractable Insomnia,

The tragedy of the illness lies in its residual affects. Complete re covery occurs only in, roughly, 25 per cent. of enses. The remainder of its victims are more or less severely disabled and usually pre- cluded from resuming their nor | mal occupations,

There is a persistent tendency in the lay mind to confuse sloopy sickness with sleeping sickness. The latter is a totally different malady, occurring as a fever in tropical Afrien eaused by a para- site conveyed by the tsetse fly.

Steopy sickness remains a tragic mystery for the human race.

NAVAL “PIRATES."

STORY OF "UNREST ON H.M.S. HOOD EXPLODED

London, Oct. 18. The rumoured unrcat on H.M.S. Hood, the largest battleship In the kworld, has been amusingly, explod- ed by a story of the local Scots miainterpretation of a naval train- Ing exercise wherein seamen maa- queraded as pirates at Invergor- don.

Vice Admiral James, on the ar rival of H.M.S. Hood at Banff, re- lates that four cutter loads of marinas, representing a party of obstreperous "pirates," landed at Cromarty Firth and subsequently. captured two drifters belonging to H.M.S. Renown and H.M.S. Hood,

ed large parties of marines to round up the pirates."

Local inhabitants, who much to their, puzzled surprise, witnessed the episode of seolng sailors be ing clinsed by marinos with fixed bayoneta, undoubtedly initiated the story of unmst among the crows of the battleships-Router.
