The casting of "The_Good_Com- panions" was a matter demanding a vast amount of consideration in order that the right types should bo selected for the various characters of the novel and at the same time to en- sure that the requisite amount of star, value was assured for the film.

Henry Ainley was the first selection, for the important role of Jess Oakroyd. When he fell ill after three weeks of "shooting," the film had to restarted with Edmund Gwenn in be the role of the warm-hearted little Yorkshireman.

The selection of the player for the role of Mrs. Jess Onkroyd was a more difficult matter. It called for woman, forty-ish, passessing a know- ledge of the Yorkshire dialect. There wasn't such

the books af n person on any of the film or stage agencies, so Victor Saville, the director, went to Yorkshire to find her. In Hudders field he wan introduced to Mrs. Florence Gregson, the wife of a York- shire playwright and actor. Mrs. Greguon acted in her husband's plays. She was (únre we mention it) of the nge demanded by the script and she could also speak the necessary dialect. So this solved one of Saville's difficult problems.

The role of Inigo Jollifant was not so difficult to settle as John Gielgud had already created this part in the etage version of Priestley's novel.

The choice for the role of Susie Dean was made in favour of Jessic

Matthews. The player filling this role had to have a good singing volco, be able, to dance shove the average, be able to act, and also understand film technique. Miss Matthews had
