They shared honours with Mr. Nathan Kelley of Boston paired with Mr. Arthur Ryan of Holyoke, Mass, Mr. Barnes and Mr. Kelley both held the East hand and were successful in mak- ing their contract of four hearts.

The Bidding

South passed, West-opened with one no trump, North passed and East bid two hearts. West bid three hearts and Enst went to four hearts.

The Play

The play at both tables was al- most identical. The jack of dia- monda was the opening lead and was won in dummy by the king. A small spade was led from dum- my, South winning with the ace.

South returned the ten of dla- monds which dummy won with the acc. The jack of spades whs led from dummy, North played the trumped king and the declarer with deuce of hearts.

The nine of hearts was led, South showed out, discarding a diamond, and a small heart was played from the dummy, North won the trick with the ten of hearts and returned the queen of diamonds, which declarer trump- ed with the four of hearts.

The king of clubs W08 then played, followed by the seven of clubs. South played the ten and the trick was won in dummy with the aco.

The ten of spades was played from dummy, déclarer discarding the nine of clubs. He then led the f four of spades from dammy, and when North played the nine, the declarer trumpad with the five of hearts.

He now led his jack of clubs. South played the queen, dummy played the eight, and North was down to the king, jack and six of hearts. He was forced to trump. the trick-with-the-six-of-hearts, and must then lend from his king- jack of hearts into dummy's nec- queen,

A

The hand almost presents double-dummy problem. Try the hand out on your friends and you will find that they will experience aome difficulty in making four hearts, even double-dummy.
