"The Good Companions"

"The Good Companions" is

panorama of England;, of the show business on tour, and the open ronda leading from Yorkshire and Lanca- shire to the Midlands,

As everyone who has rend J. B. Priestley's novel knows, it details the experienees or three rebels, Jess Oakroyd rebels against his life in a Yorkshire mill. When he gets "t'suck" he seizes the opportunity to go "down south" to the places he has read about and longs to see. Inigo Jollifant, the school teacher, rebels against the drudgery of his occupation. He de- tests the school diet of shepherd's ple and stewed prunes. He lonthes tho headmaster and his "dark and secret ]ag;'' of a wife. Miss Elizabeth Trunt, too, has spent vitul years of her life caring for her father. On his death she rebels against the thought of becoming companion to an old lady, buys a car and proceeds to drive off into the blue," not caring whither she goes. And fate brings these three vagabonds to the little town of Rawsley, "twenty miles from Litchfield," and entangles their lives with pierrot party, "The Dinky Does."

B. Priestley's entertaining char- acters come to life in a brilliant hu version of the novel. It matters not! if you have read-the-novel-or-seen- the play, you will still revel in the adventures of these vagabonds of the read as seen in the film,

"The Good Companions," magni- fcently produced by Victor Saville, preserves the spirit of the novel with its story of understanding and mis- understandings, its hopes and fears, its tears and laughter.

Jessie Matthews stars in the role of Susie Dean. With her aro Edmund Gwenn as Jens Oaltroyd, John Gielgud as Inigo Jollifant, and Mary Glynna us Miss Trant. Other characters dru played by Percy Parsons as Morton Altheam, and A. W., Backcom Jimmie Nuna.

UR

"The Good Companions" is decided- by a film which provides the maxipun of entertainment and should on no ac- count be missed when it plays at thei King's Theatre next week.
