The Chairman also said that he had received a letter from the Indian Recreation Club with regard to the Junior Division Shield. This was to the affect that, there were no mero places on the shield, and that as they had won it four times, which was more than the winnings of any other club, they would like to keep it,

Mr. Hancock said that ho had in- formed Mr. Madar that if another shield was forthcoming the members would be agreeable to the suggestion, but otherwise space would have to be found on it. There was, however, every likelihood that another shield would be forthcoming.

The meeting decided that the shield be kept by the Indian Recreation Club.

OFFICE BEARERS.

The election of office-bearers for the current year resulted as follows: President Mr. H. R. B. Hancock; Vice-President. Mr. A. W. Hayward; Hon. Secretary-Mr. A. H. Madar.

In proposing Mr. Madar,as Secre tary, Mr. Hancock anid that Mr. Madar had served; them very well during the past year, and he did not think they could do better than to elect him again.

MELTED IN FURNACE,

A fairly large percentage of mild steel scrap is mixed with haematite pig iron and the whole charged into a large furnace, where it is melted. The effect of the mild steel is to dilute the In- gredients which are present to execss in the haematite pig iron. 1 At a suitable stage in the proceed-f inge pure haematite ore is added, with the result that there is violent boiling of the whole mix- ture and the formation of a thick scum or "slag."

to

The presence of the floating covering of slag is very beneficial in the later stages of the steel- making process, since it protects the steel from being adversely affected by contact with air and. gases within the furnace. The whole operation from start finish occupies about eight hours, of which the latter half is taken up in the gradual adding of suc- cessive small charges of the haematite ore until the required percentatges of carbon and other constituents are assured in the steel as "tapped."
