CONTRACT: BRIDGE

I am wondering if my renders give sufficient thought and con- sideration to the "timing factor." We know that the timing. factor playa an important part in football, baseball and tennis, and it plays: Just as important a part in bridge. j

A hand which explains this tim- ing factor in a sample manner is given below. In adilltion to the timing factor element, the hand is also Interesting from a bidding angle.

The Bidding

The hand was played in the re- cent national championship tour. nament at Asbury Park, NJ. The majority of East and Weat play- ers secured the contract for game in hearts. However, the bidding at one table was rather interesting and was as follows:

South and West passed. North mude a weak third bid of one club. East overcalled with one heart. South bid one apude and West jumped to three hearts.

North had mado an original paychic opening bid and decided, as he was not vulnerable, to carry hia psychic through. He jumped the contract to four spades.. East,

The Play

It was South's opening lend, and whan a contract is being played at five or six, we know that the open- ing lend determines the success or failure of the contract.

Let us take the sults in turn -South had bid spades and this suit had been supported by North. However, in spite of the spade bid, East had gone to five hearts, there- fore the spades should be a bad lead:

Naturally South could not open hearts. To open diamonds looked Is though he were sacrificing a trick, therefore South should rea-| son as follows:

His partner may hold the ace of clubs and the ace of spades. How- ever, supposing that he does hold the ace of spades and only the queen and ten of clubs-then if a spade is opened his partner's ace will be knocked out and the do- clarer will probably make his con tract, while if a club is opened, he can establish a club trick, get in with the king of hearts and then lead a spade which will put his partner in with the ace.

Of course when he does lead a club, he finds A Biore fortunate situation-his partner holds the ace of clubs which is immediately the cashed, while South makes king of clubs and the king of hearts. defenting the contrast.
