When you need de- finite high card strength from partner in order to make game, it inay be botter to pass your band originally when in first or second position, and you can then entor the bidding on a later round. The great trouble in opening such a hand originally may find you play- ing it at a slam when oven game may be difficult.

This was clearly brought out in the following hand, which was re- cently played in a duplicate match. Several playera oponed South's hand with one spado and as a re- sult, at several tables, they play, ed the hand at slam contract which was easily defented, and oven those who arrived at game experienced some trouble in mak ing it. However, with propor bidding and good play the hand can be made.

The bidding should be South pass, West one club, North need get in no hurry to do anything about ths and should pass. Enst would overcall with one heart, South bids one spade. West bids two diamonds. ¦ North makes a constructive re aponse of two spades. East passes and South goes to three spades, while North enrries the contract to four'.

The Play

The ace and king of hearts were immediately cashed by West, who shifted to the ten of clubs, South winning with the king. South then played six straight spade tricks, bearing down to the ace and ten of diamonds and the nee and jack of clubs in dummy. West was forced to bear down to the queen and nine of clubs and the king and jack of diamonds. East kept two diamonds and two hearts.

South now led the deuce of dia- monds and when West was cureless enough to play the jack, the 'dum. my went up with the ace, imme diately returning the ten of dia- monds, throwing West in the lead and forcing him to lead away from his queen-nine of clubs.

However, if_West_goes_right_up. with the king of diamonds, this will force North to win with the ace and all that he, can do is to cash his nee of clubs,

Here we and a hand with plenty of quick tricks and good support from partner going down at four spades. It is this type of hand which proves that distribution fa equally as imporant, if not more 30. a high cards.
