Despite the extremely high velocity of the wind, the strong current kept the Cornwall almost broadside on to the gale, and It was this that was responsible for the loss of the ship's scaplane.

An exceptionally heavy gust tore the upper structure of the seaplane from the wires holding it down to the ship, and carried it overboard. The full intensity of the typhoon passed by 9 p.m., but extremely gusty weather was experienced practically the whole of the night. With the exception of the loss of the seaplane, no damage was done to the Cornwall, which sailed for Hongkong next day.
