CONTRACT M.G.M.'s SUCCESS for the QUEEN'S.

BRIDGE

Robert MONTGOMERY

By W. E. McKenney

Getting into the right contract often requires tactful mangCUVT-- ing of the bidding. A mort unusually intereating hand both from the standpoint of tactful bidding and good playing is one recently played by Samuel D. Ostrow of Erie, Pa.

Mr. Ostrow ant in the South and passed, as did West. North open- ed with one club, and 'East pass- ed.

South held two five-card suits. However, the spade sult is so weak that the better responge is a forcing one over one bid of one diamond. West overcalled with a heart, North went to ono no tramp.

While South might have orly- inally felt that his partner's bid of one club, being a third-hand bid, was rather weak, the overcall -of-ane no trump over West's-bid-

now showed that North had really ne hand. When Enst- passed. Mr. Ostrow in the South

showed his second suit, trying to find a fit, as he realized that the hand should not play at no trump. Therefore he bid two spades.

West passed and North jumped to four spades. West made a bad double, as he was sure to disclose the location of valuable high cards to the declarer.

The Play

The play of the hand was un usually interesting. West opened the king of hearts which Mr. Ostrow in the South won with the uce la order to prevent ruffing by his opponents he immediately j played trump. On his deuce, West played the nine, the ten was finessed and East won the trick with the jack.

East returned his partner's suit which South trumped with. the three of spades. Another trump

was led and West went in with the ace and then swung his queen of hearts.

~ Mr. Ostrow in the South made a very fine play-he refused to trump the queen of hearts so as to conserve an entry in his hand for his good queen" of diamonds. Instead of trumping, he played tinued with the jack of hearts, the alx of diamonds. West con-

and Mr. Ostrow trumped with the five of spades.

The ace and king of diamonds were cashed and the ace and king of clubs led from dummy. Mr. Ostrow then led the ten of clubs from dummy and East made the "midstake of covering with the queen. Mr. Ostrow trumped with the seven of spades and then swung his quoen of diamonds. When West trumped with the queen of spades, Mr. Ostrow | trumped in dummy with the king of spade and won the last trick In dummy with the nine of clubs. If East had refused to cover the ten of clubs with the queen, the contract would have been de- feated.
