KULIANG HUMOUR
HOW "TAX” ISSUE WAS
OVERCOME
more hope.
The summer season is nearly over, and a few lines should bo written to tell how Kuliang has been appreciated this your. The weather has been all that holiday- makorn could desire, and than they usually dare to Since the beginning of July there has been very little rain,. and no typhoon has come (up to the date of writing) to try the nerves of the timorous and to gladden the
• hearts of the local masons and carpenters (who seem to spring up like mushrooms when repairs are needed). There has been very Hittle thunder until the last week or ae, when one or two severe but brief thunderstorms visited us. In short, so far, Kullang has on- joyed almost uniformly Ane weather. Of course the farmers do not like the long drought, but there was-enough-rain-in-the spring to ensure a fairly good first crop, and so there is no danger of,! nny serious shortage. Those who have visited Kulinng for the first time this year, will probably wish to come again.

at least, sufficiently to permit of traffe; the surface on that part nearest Foochow city leaves much to be desired, but Chinese chauf feurs do not seem eastly daunted.. It is only a ten or fliteen minutes run in a car from the East Gate to the foot of the mountain, and less than half an hour from Nantal (where most of the foreigners live, south of the Mia River), A good walker can walk up from the foot to the Kuliang settlement in 1% hours or less, and down in forty So Kuliang- la now separated from Nantal by only one or two hours.
