CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
I am pleased to present to you to-day one of our new master players in the person of Samuel Fry who, with his teammates, re- cently won the All-American Con- tract Team-of-four Championship. Mr. Fry well demonstrates the type of bridge that is played by the strong group of contract play- ors at Deal, N. J., headed by P. Hal Sims. It was with this group that Mr. Fry as a youngster first played, and to-day he ranks as one of the youngest of champions.

Mr. Fry then bid two no trump. South bid three spades and Mr. Fry had a close question to decide -whether this was a ning or a ten-trick hand. It looked more simple to him to make nine tricks and so, instead of bidding four spades, he wont three no trump.

East opened the six of hearts. West played the jack and Mr. Fry won with the queen. He immediate ly saw that four spadca spread and even though he made three no trump he would have bad score on the board. His only chance, therefore, was to try to make four no trump.
This could only be accomplished by establishing another heart trick. However, Mr. Fry realized that if he led a heart immediately his op ponents would start the diamond suit and then even game could not bo made.—a
He therefore decided on a little strategy and led a club, winning in dummy with the king and then lending a small diamond. West played low and Mr. Fry played the queen, East winning with the ace.
Erst could not be blamed for not returning a diamond so long as the declarer had started to calab lish that sult himself, so he re- turned a spade which Mr. Fry won and then led a heart. Enst won with the ace and continued with then another spade. Mr. Fry spread the hand for four no trump and top score on the board.
INSULTS JUDGES
STRANGE BEHAVIOUR IN TOKYO COURT
Tokyo, Aug. 20. Nissho Inoue, said to be the leader of the Blood, League, to whom the murder of the late Fin ance Minister, Baron Dan, was attributed, has been causing the courts a great amount of embar
assment.
Inoue, who is now in gaol, has been troubling the judiclal" of- ficials by refusing to be tried by the judges in charge of the case, denouncing them as incompetent and insincore.
A remarkable development oc-1 curred, yesterday when Chlof. Judge Sakamaki personally called on Inoue and offered to hold the criminal proceedings in the way the the prisoner desired.. But Inoue turned down the offer,
The judge's action is being publicly criticised as unprecedented In the history of Japanese justice The Incident has puzzled of- ficials and the trial has been post- poned indefinitely-Router.
