THE WORLD

OF WOMEN

Suits With Fantasy and Formality

GAY SUMMER TAILLEURS RETAIN PRACTICAL NOTE

BY JEAN PATOU Written for NEA Service. Puris. It is doubtless because of its subtle charm that women are so fond of the little summer suit. I admit that it always can be counted upon to contribute a note of novelty to a woman's wardrobe, and can therefore never tire by Its mono- tony.

the Ita only resemblance to strictly tailored, sober and even austere sult of years ago is in Its composition, that is, the combining of a skirt and jacket, although, of course, the modern suit is often composed of a dress which can well bo worn alone as well as a jacket.

The fact that the summer sult offers a great deal of fantasy does not by any means debar it from being distinguished. This fantasy prevents it from being too sad and sober, and this is the note I always endeavour to avoid in my summer collections.

*

There is, as a matter of fact, a definite scale of elegando in these summer tailleurs. Some can ba given an informal note-others are sufficiently formal to be worn at

smart functions. At the races, for

example, they are not at all out of place and are often singled out for their air of restrained elegance and chic.

The practical note, always the main feature of the old tailleur, is still present and even accentuated in its modern edition. Take for example a sult composed of a navy blue or black satin dress over which is placed a jacket of some brightly-hued Hinen. The dress itself belongs to the semi-formal ufternoon category. Worn with The jacket, it constitutes a perfect- ly appropriate and practical town
