"Reunion in Vienna" Hollywood's version of Robert E. Sherwood's "Reunion in Vienna," the theatre masterpiece stands as direct refutation of the traditional mutilation of stage play when run through the cinematic grist mills. Indeed, the theatre offering would probably suffer by con.parison.
lin's
With John Barrymore starred and Diana Wynyard heading the support ing cast, coupled with Sidney Frank- superb direction, the film achieves the happiest of results. Pictorially it has a fluid beauty that enhances it vastly and adds a glamor- ous background for the brilliant Sher- wood dialogue. Barrymore offers as engaging a portrayal as he has, ac 'complished in his career,
The picture will crown Miss Wyn- yard, we belleve, with the mantle of stardom, She negotiates her role of, the love-hungry Viennese wife with genuine sympathy that smooths over whatever wantonness night have been; suggested in the dialogue. She is beautifully photographed and her performance fita nicely alongside Barrymore's own excellent portrayal. Naturally,--Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's gorgeous mounting of the play adds lustre and glamour to the film, which is coming on Sunday to the Queen's Theatre.
Particularly striking are the set- tings and costuming. Much credit must go to Franklin for his careful translation of the Sherwood piece and for the delicate handling of situations, obviously close to cenaorable frowns.
"Rain"
Joan Crawford, who will be seen in "Rain" at the King's Theatre on Sun- day, is herself far more interesting, more vital, than any role she bus crented upon the screen. Restless, moody, high-strung, she makes full use of every hour as if she felt that life is all too short. She is a brilliant example of the modern girl.
In "Possessed", "Grand Hotel" and in "Letty Lynton" her dramatie has been manifest, and now in power the famed role of "Sadil Thompson" she reaches a zenith enjoyed by few Hollywood actresses.
Ever since she became a star, some three years
Joan Crawford has
been the Degroomed sophisti- ente. She is now in a role which makes her nearly the exact opposite.
Jonn had wanted to play this part ever since she heard rumours that Lowin Milestone and Joseph Bf. Schenck had decided to do it. She had spirited competition for it, as Talullah Bankhead and several other stars had been tested for it, but she won out, even though she had to pravall upon Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
