Some have remained at sea for as many as 30 days.
The second way of escape is to swim the 1,500 yard wide Maroni River into Dutch territory. There the convicts live in hiding in hopes of getting to Paramaribo. This is an even more hazardous means of escape. The wild beasts of the forest, the heat and Inck of food kill off many of the refugees from Devil's Island.
