SAVAGE FIGHT.

The fight for the British Heavy- weight title on July 12, it will be recalled, was one of the most savage in the history of the con- temporary boxing ring.

The fight lasted only two and a half rounds, but, during that time Doyle was warned for hug ging and was finally disqualified for hitting Petersen with two pal- bably low blows.

Both men lashed out viciously and their short but sharp fights: constituted one of the most re-i markable displays of post-war championship bouts.

Petersen has enjoyed a me- teoric enreer, and since September 1931 has won eleven big fights. Six of the decision have been on knock-out blows.-Reuter.

JAS. LANGRIDGE IN FORM

London, July 19.

In the first Gentlemen v., Players match of the season, which opened at Lord's to-day, the Players found difficulty in scoring runs, and in compiling 278 for nine wickets before the close, owed practically every thing to Leslie Ames and James Langridge.

Ámics, whose batting since his re- turn from Australia, has been con- sistently brilliant, batted in elegant style and with perfect freedom.

He scored 82 before dismissal, and made his runs with classical strokes all round the wicket.

Langridge, a loft hander with many graceful strokes, also batted well and compiled 71. He has been selected to make his Initial op- pearance in Test cricket. on Satur day and his current form suggest that he will make a lot of runs.- Reuter..
