CONTRACT BRIDGE.
By W. E. McKenney
Do you ever "shade" a two bid In the constructive one over one system of bidding? Most certainly not-it is not necessary.
If you haven't enough tricks in your own hand to go game, then you need some support from part. ner; and in this system partner

will give you a bid with but very little strength. While I definitely say that you must not shade a two bid, I do not condemn a player, after he has got some information

on, the bidding, for taking a long #hot.
I recently watched the following hand played in a rubber gamo and. thought the South player had made a good bid, but was surpHsed to
A GREAT DOUBLE SPORTING PROGRAMME
800 him make a caroles play and DOROTHY BOUCHIER lose his contract.
The Bidding
South, the dealer, oponed the bidding with one heart, and Weat responded with ono spade. Per- sonally we recommend a negative double when holding the opposite major.
North passed the one spada bid, as did East. As East and West were playing a system which ro quired three tricks for an informa- tory double, South felt that West's hand wae none too strong. East had showed nothing by his pass; so South took the long shot and bid four hearts.
The Play
West opened the king of spades and followed with the ace, de- clarer trumped the second spade with the jack of hearts so as to create an entry in dummy.
How would you play the hand from here? Would you lead a small heart to dummy and then flnesse the diamond suit? If so, you would lose your contract because the finesse would fail, West would re- turn a heart and you would be forced to lose two diamends and a club in addition to the spade al- rendy lost.
The proper play is to lead right out with the nee of diamonds and then lead a small diamond. Now, regardless of whether East or West wins the trick, you are bound to make your contract because you will be able to run two diamonds and therefore lose only one ala- 'mond, one spade and one elub
trick.
