A woman has just made the most daring escape from prison ever re- corded in Portugal.

This woman was serving n sentence of 28 years' imprisonment for the murder of her son. She picked the lock of her cell high up in the prison, and opened a window In the corridor,

she had managed to make a rope In preparation for her escape

of handkerchiefs, and, using this, she swung herself twelve feet along the wall, and grasped the lighting conductor.

She was still 100 feet above the ground, but she climbed down the lightning conductor to the prison courtyard.

A 15-foot wall still stood be- tween her and freedom-but she At the last moment she was seen. The alarm was i sounded, and warders rushed out.
