The Americans are divided on the question of the withdrawal of the Pittman resolution which is viewed as conflicting with President Roosevelt's statement, which has occasioned considerable surprise among all the members of the delegation.

The resolution adds that in view of the necessity for restoring the confidence of the East in its purchasing medium, silver, which can only be done if the price of silver is restored to equilibrium with commodity price levels, steps should be taken to rehabilitate silver.
It is suggested with this object, inter alia, that an agreement be sought between the chief silver producing and silver-using coun- iries to limit arbitrary sales upon the world market,
Senator Pittman, in introducing the resolution, declared it to be the first international recognition of silver since 1873.
Meanwhile, important confor- ences are going on between the delegations of the gold countries.

LEADER
EX-PRESIDENT
IRIGOYEN
Buenos Aires, July 3, The death has occured of the octogenarian politician, ex-Pre- sident Irigoyen.
Dr. Irigoyen may be called the last of the Argentino caciques. In a more turbulent country he
would have been a dictator.
Dr. Irigoyen avas born in the Province of Bueno Aires on a date and in a year impossible to deter- mino. But he was over eighty. He was of modest origin, a criolló, or a native Argentine. Hla name showed a Basque ancestry and his swarthy complexion au admixture of Indian blood. He was six feet in height.
He received political tutelage under his uncle, Dr. Leandro Alem who led a semi-successful revolu-
tion in 1890 in which Irigoyen figured as chief of the revolution- ary police force. Years later, Dr. Alem lost the support of many of his political friends and committ- ed suicide.

MYSTERIOUS POWER.
He wielded a mysterious power that carried him to the very chair of the Presidency. He arrived at this most exalted position in the land without having pronounced a speech, written a book, held pub activities, frequented social cir lle office, taken part in business cles, travelled over the republic. participated in meetings, person- ally directed the electorate, done any campaigning, been interview- ed by the press, been photograph ed with his old father, or patted any babies on the head.

He was swept into the Presidency over the ruins of the Conservative Party which had for half a century governed the country.
