While we do not open with one no trump unless, we hold a vory strong hand in the constructive one over one system of contract bid- ding, this does not mean that wo Avold the playing of a contract at no trump.

You should always be on the ndart to play a hand at no trump, but try to place the declaration in the proper hand. Before launching into a, no trump contract, however, make sure that the hand has no holes, especially if you have a good playable major suit,

hearts for a top score on board. That, however, does make it the correct declaration-it required a very fine coup play to make the four odd at hearts.

The correct bidding on the ind is South one heart, North one spade, South two hearts, North three diamonds, and South three no trump.

West will open a club. It will be necessary to lay off one club and

the contract is in.

To make four odd at hearts, even with a club opening, the declarer must at once proceed to ruff a club and then lend the ten of hearts, which Enst will cover with the jack and the declarer will win with, the

queen.

The natural play is for the de- clarer to play down the

ace of hearts, West will discard a club and dummy a spade. This makes it look as though the declarer must lose one heart trick. However, the jack of diamonds can next be led, East will win with the queen and his best is to return the sight of diamonds, which will be won in dummy with the nine.

Declarer will now return a small spade from dummy, which Enat wins with the queen. Enst will cash his ace of spades and then fend a small spade on which the declarer must discard his deuce of diamonds, winning the spade trick in dummy.

He can then lead the ace of din- monds, Enst will be forced to trump. declarer will over-trump and can now pick up the two re- maining trump.

While this is a nicely played hand, the safer contract is three

no trump.
